Towards a Unified Theory of Economic and Political Development

چکیده
This paper proposes a unified theory of economic and political development. By analyzing development in both dimensions as interdependent processes in a dynamic perspective, the model is able to nest several recent theories about democratization within a single framework. Moreover, the model delivers the conditions under which the different patterns of development discussed in the literature arise, allowing to assess their empirical relevance. Several implications for state formation, the endogenously determined structure of constitutions, and development policy are discussed.
